Christmas is over, but it’s getting too cold to spend much time outdoors. If your kids are getting stir crazy, you may need to find some indoor activities to get them into the community and out of your apartment. The great news for those families living in Chapel Watch Village is that Chapel Hill and Durham offer a number of great indoor activities that are quite kid-friendly. Here are some of our favorites.
Go Swimming in Durham
The Edison Johnson Aquatic Center and the Campus Hills pools have daily public swim times for just a few dollars per person in nearby Durham. Some kids are even free! These pools are warm and welcoming when the weather outdoors is chilly, and you can even sign the kids up for a swim class to give them the skills they need for swimming success.
This music-themed indoor play space in Durham will give your kids a chance to climb, slide and even awaken their inner musician. Everything here is designed to connect kids with music, and if you find that you have a budding virtuoso, you can even sign up for music classes.
The Scrap Exchange
Teach your kids to reuse and recycle while learning to be creative at the Scrap Exchange. Here your kids will find a large number of materials available that include everything from screws and bolts to ribbon and construction paper. For just $5 per person, your child can spend 90 minutes creating anything he can imagine, and take that creation with him when you leave. If your kids are older, you can head into the Design Center, where a hot t-shirt press, sewing machine, die-cut machine and button maker are available.
Kidzu Children’s Museum
If you don’t want to head into Durham, Chapel Hill offers the Kidzu Children’s Museum. Here kid-friendly exhibits encourage hands-on learning in a variety of STEM topics, while a climbing wall gives children a place to burn off some energy. At Kidzu, kids will not only get some of their energy out, but they will also have the chance to learn something at the same time.
Do you have a favorite place to take the kids in the Triangle when they need to get out of the house? Our area is full of things to do, so be sure to share with your neighbors.
